June Hedditch Residency – artist accommodation

Description of Venue: The June Hedditch Apartments (used by the June Hedditch Residency) are situated in the heart of the beautiful seaside town of Portland in Western Victoria. They are dedicated to the use of artists of all persuasions in the memory of June Hedditch, who worked tirelessly to foster the arts in Portland.

There are two apartments, situated on the second floor above the Julia Street Creative Space and the Portland Bay Press. They are normally let out as one space. The apartment overlooking Julia St has wonderful northern light and contains the master bedroom and a large studio space. The rear apartment contains the lounge and a bedroom with two single beds. The two apartments share one bathroom and a fully featured kitchen.

Artists can rent the apartments for $50/night provided they intend to work on their art there. Additional adults are $20/night each and children are $10/night each. Each 7th night is free. Bookings are essential!

Print makers are especially well catered for as the apartments have access to the Portland Bay Press which boasts modern presses and associated equipment. Use of these facilities however requires that the print maker join the Portland Bay Press ($40) and also its parent body CEMA (various rates from $20-$40).

Since the JHR is run by the Julia Street Creative Space, any resident artist has the opportunity to engage with the local arts community to whatever extent they wish. Apart from the PBP, other resident arts groups include: the Portland Artists' Society (painting and drawing), the Portland Woodturning Guild, the Pioneer Quilters, the Portland Fibre Group and the Portland Leadlighters' Guild. Other disciplines and organisations may be accessed using the contacts available within the JSCS.

The opportunity to run workshops and other community engagements for money may be available depending on the circumstances. It will be necessary to consult with JSCS and the relevant group more than a month in advance if you wish to explore this option.
