SALT artist call out

March 18 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

During the Colac Otway Arts Trail Barking Spider Visual Theatre artists Jason Lehane and Penelope Bartlau will open their studio doors in Cundare North. The wonderful old barn transformed into a working studio will welcome visitors on Sunday 18th March 10am-3pm. Visitors will be able to see Penelope and Jason with a handful of local textile and mixed media artists and individuals working from 10am to 1pm on the installation ‘SALT’. SALT will be shown at WINDOWSPACE-BEEAC during the month of April.

Salt as a mineral has the ability to preserve. SALT a visual arts/installation project is an imagining of what may have been preserved in the region’s abundance of salt lakes: a reinvention of an invisible history. The focus will be on the dancing debutante, a strong, female symbol and a significant theme of enLIGHTen Me Festival. This dancing debutante theme links with the dancing Brolga Dreamtime story. Brolgas are an endangered and significant bird in the area, that live in salt lakes and marshes: the Brolga and her story will also form an important part of the artwork.

Penelope and Jason are looking for textile and or mixed media artists or just people who love making things (a maximum of 6-8) to be part of a workshop 10am to 1pm on Sunday 18th March with the focus being to create elements to form the installation or just as experimental pieces for the participant. The workshop will explore the use of salt and its effect on materials, objects will be created with guidance and freedom to explore. Knowledge and skills will be shared.
