Nonagenarian: 16 Portraits by Christine Ansorge

21 August- 15 September with a meet the artist and some of the nonagenarians at a launch on Friday 23 August 6pm-8pm

The F Project is looking forward to this special celebration of some of our special community members through artworks and invite you to come and see the exhibition and meet Christine Ansorge and some of her subjects at the opening launch on Friday 23 August 6pm-8pm.

A few words from Christine:

Christine’s portraits are of people who are aged between 90 and 99 (nonagenarians)and still living at home.

All of the subjects are still active and caring forthemselves and they are all people in our community. Most live in Warrnambool with some from Terang, Port Fairy and Koroit.

The theme of Christine’s work is ‘old age’ but she is specifically focusing on those that have aged

well. Aging is a highly individualised and complex process; yet it continues to

be stereotyped, especially in Western cultures. These stereotypes play a

powerful role in shaping how we think about and interact with the elderly, as

well as how these people see themselves. Stereotypes of aging are often

negative depicting later life as a time of ill health, loneliness, dependency, and

poor physical and mental functioning. We generally think that most people

over 90 are living in care, frail and unable to look after themselves.

Yet this is certainly not always the case and it is mChristine’s aim, through creating beautiful fine

art portraits of nonagenarians, to challenge these stereotypes.

The subjects of her portraits have lived, laughed, cried, grieved, delighted, danced, sang,

cursed and loved for a lifetime and more and this shows in their demeanour,

their lines, their eyes, their expressions, their hands and their gestures.

It is these that Christine Ansorge wants the viewer to see and connect with. She wants the viewer to look

at her portraits and see a person who has lived a full life and continues to do so

despite their age. The subjects of her exhibition defy these stereotypes. They

are all independent, alert and content and don’t view age as a barrier to

happiness and fulfilment.
