Jenny Altmann Paintings

4 July – 29 July 2018

Opening night Saturday 7 July 6pm-8pm

On finishing her three year Diploma of Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art, Jenny Altmann saw some graffiti written on the wall of the Queensland Art Gallery saying “ninety percent of Queensland artists go South. Why don’t you?” so she did.

Finding Melbourne rather large and overwhelming, she came to Warrnambool to upgrade to a degree over two years at Deakin University. After a 5 year sabbatical to have her two children, she returned to Deakin to do honours. At the same time she was employed by Deakin University and South West Tafe as a painting and drawing teacher.

Jenny worked with students with special needs, integrating them into the Diploma Art classes which lead to starting a school for these talented individuals, funded by WDEA. Later Jenny set up private classes at The Fletcher Jones Factory and also was involved with the set up of Outlaw Gallery.

After thirty years of teaching it is now time for Jenny to spend some more time on her own artwork. Since early childhood she has always drawn and painted about things close to her heart…people, the local environment and significant life events.

Her work is an intuitive response to what she sees rather than an illustrative interpretation. Jenny has been influenced by the works of many artists. Amongst her favourites are Munch, Van Gogh, Kandinsky and Louise Bourgeois.
