Recent Paintings and Works on Paper

Opening launch Saturday 12  January  4pm- 6pm

Jackson McLaren is a Melbourne based artist whose practice is an ongoing exploration of colour, layer and shape. Since 2015, Jackson has held six solo exhibitions and has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney, New Zealand and his home town of Warrnambool.

‘I’m a keen jogger and most days of the week I go for a run along the Darebin Creek Trail near my house in Alphington. I love running through the landscape along the creek and spotting kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets, tawny frogmouth owls and blue tongue lizards. This has been a constant inspiration for my painting over the last few years’.

Jackson comes from a music background. As a singer/songwriter he has toured extensively across Australia with many national and international acts. He writes songs about the beauty found in everyday life.

Jackson spent the month of August 2018 travelling in Japan with partner Lucy. Along the way he collected lots of ephemera including train tickets, exhibition pamphlets and envelopes. He has incorporated a lot of these items into his works on paper for this exhibition.

In late 2017 Jackson moved out of his shared studio space at ‘The Bank’ Studios in Preston (to make way for an apartment block) and turned the spare bedroom in his unit in Alphington into a studio space.’ I adapted to working in smaller bursts – early in the morning, after work, whenever I could grab an hour. I often work on a few pieces at the one time in order to ‘free up’ my practice and stay playful and spontaneous. Although I like to work quickly, because my paintings are so densely layered they can sometimes take up to a few months to complete.’

Recent Paintings and Works on Paper is a selection of 20 works created throughout 2018. There is no overarching narrative in this exhibition but certain motifs and symbols bring a continuity to the work such as vessel shapes, flowers, crosses, gestural mark making, hard edge shapes, many layers of paint and a strong emphasis on colour.
