Decoding the Sea

Beach debris picked up from the sand, brought home and re imagined.

Rachel Peters and Shelley Knoll-Miller have walked the beaches of Warrnambool together for years.

These established artists share a love of collecting discarded objects and using them to create visual stories. Tiny pieces of plastic were admired on the sand, pocketed and  brought home, along with old rope, and broken nets that had been washed ashore.

“The growing reports of plastics polluting our oceans and their effect on marine life, can feel depressing and dis-empowering. We create a sense of hope by collecting beach debris and making it into something beautiful ”say these creative women.

“In the water these plastics are a liability to our own health as well as marine life. When these plastics are on our walls they do no more harm. They are just artworks that make us happy.”

These pieces of beach debris form the basis of an exhibition to be featured at the F Project from April 3rd until 28th April.

The work includes grid like collages made from beach found plastics and organic pieces carefully woven from sea soaked rope and broken nets.
