Across the Waves
10 South West Printmakers explore migratory waterbirds
26 September – 21 October 2018
Opening night Friday 28 September 6pm
Ten South West printmakers, Des Bunyon, Delia Crabbe, Ben Fennessy, Sue Ferrari, Jean Gleeson, Jodie Honan, Marion Manifold, Andrea Radley, Maree Stewart and Heather Wood, have joined forces using the medium of print making to highlight the plight of migratory waterbirds, supporting ‘The Overwintering Project’ an environmental art project run by Kate Gorringe-Smith with artists from Australia and New Zealand responding to the unique nature of their local migratory shorebird habitats.
Migratory and coastal birds are suffering from human pressures. Many birds are making the epic flight to Australia only to end up dying from plastic pollution – the single feather, and the plastic nest, a reminder of this ominous end.
Each needs action so it doesn’t disappear altogether. Dogs, climate change, drainage, urban and industrial development … all have an effect. Being migratory they suffer from a lack of visibility – here one day and gone the next.
Hopefully this exhibition and the other exhibitions in the ‘Overwintering Project’ will increase awareness of the migratory shorebirds’ issues.
