Double Bass Tattoo

Although named Gypsy Spelling I present my artworks under the alias ‘Pencil Tattooist’.
I’ve developed the method of Guitar Art that uses Pencil instead of Paint. I’ve worked with the biggest names in Australian Guitar making and in 2018 I’ve been invited to take my Guitar Art work international.

Story of my Guitar Art business (Double Bass Tattoo);
Working with Australian based international guitar makers since the start of 2017, having completed numerous units for release and more yet to be completed.
Ongoing teaching the ‘Art of Pencil Tattooing’ for The Melbourne School of Ukulele and in our studio.
Retail clients throughout the past 7 years of trading.
Presented works at many festivals from Port Fairy Folk, Melbourne Guitar Show, Lady Luck Rockabilly…many more.
Displayed works in Galleries throughout Australia, Gallery One88 (Katoomba NSW), Chapman & Bailey (Collingwood VIC), Lethbridge Central Plaza (Brisbane QLD)…many more.

Story of my Art Journey so far;
From the age of fourteen my love for music playing alternated between bass and six string guitar, while drawing exposed a constant expression of artistic attitude. I was passionate about Tattoos; at school in trouble for covering his arms in pen drawings of skulls, spiders and all things scary. Would it be possible to combine the passions of Tattoos and Music?
After becoming a fulltime automotive Spray Painter, I had himself tattooed and the music was beginning to come together (playing in many bands).
I covered my guitars with airbrushed painted designs, then tried brushed paint, even scarification of the guitars, but all of these methods did not satisfy the expected style of combining these passions successfully to produce a Tattooed Guitar.
I continued to trial and refine methods but not with great success until finding a strong relationship between Pencil & Polyurethane, and from this Double Bass Tattoo was born.
Now I utilise all their artistic talents through the process of sanding, applying pencil on Guitar, Double Bass, Violin, Banjo, Ukulele or Drum, polyurethane to seal, producing depth, definition and a lifetime of unique imagery. These Tattoos are applied to previously lacquered finishes or raw timber. The method of mixing both of the artistic & chemically proven features of these two tools of Guitar Tattooing produce an amazing result that can not be matched by any other previously used method.

In between working on Guitars and other musical instruments I Tattoo using Pencil directly onto timber pieces. These pieces are used for templates for Guitar Art ideas, quotes and also random art pieces for art shows, experiment and for the love of “Tattooing timber using Pencil”.

Tattoos on Guitars & Drums using Pencil
We enhance Guitars & Drums using minimal sanding, and a blending technique that settles the Tattoo of Pencil, gently into the original finish.
