Brett Pevitt

I began my stonemasonry career as an apprentice with Behncke Stonemasonry based in Penshurst in 1999 using local Grampian sandstone. I commenced my apprenticeship with a german mason Bert Behncke and his son. They quarried the stone, processed and also used it in a variety of construction projects. I also worked with Broadhurst stone houses working on a variety of houses all over Victoria and NSW. I completed my trade apprenticeship with Holmesglen tafe whilst working with Scott Lawless of Gippsland stone.

I was drawn to Stonemasonry as my Uncle was a stonemason. The local region is rich in stone and stone has been an important part of Gunditjmara culture and continues to be. I currently work as a boilermaker but continue to undertake regular stone projects. Most recently I completed the heritage listed Bessiebelle Sheepwash Restoration project with Gunditj mirring.

As a qualified stonemason I enjoy working with local stone continuing a tradition thousands of years old in the Gunditjmara culture. I look forward to learning new skills to share with my community.
