Shore Lines-Oil Paintings Harry Olivier 14 March- 8 April Opening 16 March 6pm-8pm

March 14 @ 10:00 am - April 8 @ 4:00 pm

Here at the hem of the bay, at the hem of the world,

illusions flower in light

from the hard, rinsed root of bare exchange.’

Shelley Beach by Margaret Scott

‘Shore lines’ is a series of paintings created from photos of the shallow waters of Stingray Bay, capturing the slow lapping of waves as they roll over the sand, churning up the beach before withdrawing and allowing the sands to settle.

Light glistens on the water as it repeats this to-ing and fro-ing, and, after staring intensely, patterns emerge, inspiring this series.

Olivier’s paintings draw on a diverse range of visual works including Yves Klein, Mark Tobey, Gloria Petyarre, Kurt Jackson and Jackson Pollock.

They start from the memories of the many experiences of standing in the shallow water and losing oneself, immersing oneself, giving oneself over to the moment in these surroundings.

They meditate on the ever changing nature of the shore line, the relentless advancing and retreating of the water and the force of the winds as they batter the foreshore.

There is no permanence here. Thousands of years ago this place would have been overlooking land stretching all the way to Tasmania and millions of years ago it would have been 100 meters underwater.

In each work the photo and memory act as starting points from which the paintings grow into their own.

They are ambiguous and playful works that sit in tension between the form and formless, pattern and chaos, stillness and movement.

Layer after layer of texture, colour and form build the paintings up with the purpose of trying to capture some sense of a brief moment in time and place, a present that is always beyond our grasp.

Harry Olivier artist:

After immigrating to Australia in 2012 Harry Olivier’s work took a new direction as he became enchanted with the unfamiliar and beautiful landscape of South West Victoria.

Using pattern, form, colour and movement he has been grappling with his place in a strange old land with its own distinct rhythms of history and culture.

Harry had work bought by the SW Region Cancer Centre 2016. He was a finalist Norvill Art Prize for Landscape Painting, Murrundindi,NSW and has been part of group shows in Cardiff.
