Collin Tenney

An artist is born not made, though the path towards learning and developing one’s craft can be set with obstacles. Collin knew as a child that he wanted to explore the world of art; like many kids he painted on the walls of his family home. Being a painter though is different to becoming an artist – the spiritual need to communicate via the painting medium required learning about those different mediums. Watercolours, acrylics, oils, brushes, easels: these are the tool kits of the artist and like any tool they need to be experienced and techniques learnt to bring them to their full potential.

Collin had started classes when he lived in Queensland in the late 1980s. His passion for art took a back dive though as the needs of daily life took precedence. However when he moved to Casterton in 2007 he met other artists who reignited his passion for artistic expression. Collin then became a founding member of ‘Artists of the Valley’, a community art group. Moving then to Sandford, just 5km out of Casterton, Collin saw an opportunity for a workshop/gallery. The old fire shed where the CFA had based their operations for so many years, was for sale, so he bought it. Keeping the blazing red of the fire shed door as his acknowledgement to their efforts, he named his working gallery “The Sandford Red Door Gallery” (SRDG). Collin kept the CFA (Community Fire Brigade) initials above the door saying that now they stand for ‘Collin’s Fantastic Art’. 🙂

Since that time Collin has won many awards and received many acknowledgements for his work in art and for the community. Collin has been inspired by the work of Margaret Olley (1924 – 2011) though he has chosen to work primarily in acrylics.

Collin Tenney is an artist who works primarily in acrylics. He is located in Sandford, Victoria and runs the Sandford Red Door Gallery.
A painting takes a lifetime to make.
